Master of Science in Teaching


The Master of Science in Teaching is an advanced degree designed to elevate your leadership, intellect, and professional knowledge of educational theory and techniques for the promotion of lifelong learning and academic excellence. The degree coursework will emphasize issues of instruction, program development, and program management in Pre-K-12 educational learning environments and non-traditional settings. Each course is designed to incorporate a portfolio-quality project with close supervision and collaboration by the instructor that requires students to apply skills to specific scenarios. In addition, the final course in the core is designed as a capstone course, in which you will design an innovative and original approach to address a current problem within the field of education.

Program Core - Course Descriptions

OTL531 - Models of Instructional Delivery: Examination and analysis of historical and contemporary models for delivery of instruction. Focus on applications of instructional methods in Pre-K-12 environments and non-traditional settings .

OTL540 - Instructional Theory and Design Principles: Introduction to instructional system design theories and models used in Pre-K-12 learning environments and non-traditional settings. Practical emphasis on application of these theories to effective course design.

OTL541 - Evaluation and Assessment: Examination of methods and techniques for evaluation and assessment of learning in pk-12 settings with a focus on instructional improvement and student achievement.

OTL543 - Multimedia Technologies and Design Principles: Survey of methods, skills, and tools for creating multimedia learning opportunities. Creative exploration and application of new and emerging multimedia technologies to integrate into the classroom.

OTL550 - Curriculum Development and Design: Philosophies and theories guiding the development of curriculum and courses for effective learning. Practical application in establishing quality assurance models for teaching and learning at the instructional level.

OTL565 - Differentiating Instruction: Examination of the theory and methods for creating multiple pathways of learning to accommodate students with varying backgrounds of knowledge, readiness, language, interest, and learning styles.

OTL568 - Action Research: Advanced examination of a teacher led research approach with an emphasis on instructional improvement and student learning.

OTL599 - Capstone Project: This course provides students the opportunity to demonstrate the culmination of their learning in the MSTOL through the design of a capstone project or portfolio of customized professional work.
